A Christian theologian has launched a lawsuit against a Methodist Bible university, saying that he was sacked because of a social media post about homosexuality.

Dr. Aaron P. Edwards was fired in March after 7 years of teaching theology at Cliff College in Derbyshire, England.

He was accused of “bringing the college into disrepute” with his posts on X denouncing the church’s growing embrace of homosexuality.

“Homosexuality is invading the Church. Evangelicals no longer see the severity of this b/c they’re busy apologizing for their apparently barbaric homophobia, whether or not it’s true. This is a ‘Gospel issue’, by the way. If sin is no longer sin, we no longer need a Savior,” the theologian wrote on Feb. 19.

According to Edwards, the post and others defending it sparked outrage among LGBTQ activists, causing his employer, Cliff College, to issue a statement calling his post “unacceptable” and “inappropriate.”

Edwards declined to delete the post from his personal account, claiming that it was not “defamatory” or “abusive” to anybody, which would violate the college’s social media policy.

His social media statements, however, enraged LGBT activists and apparently created “distress” among members of the Methodist Church in Britain, prompting an inquiry, suspension, and firing.

According to the school’s investigation report, they discussed submitting Edwards to Prevent, the UK government’s counter-terrorism and hate speech arm.

Rev. Ashley Cooper, the principal of Cliff College, later disputed that they had threatened to denounce the professor.

The Christian Legal Center, which is assisting Edwards in his legal battle with the school, stated that minutes from the disciplinary hearing and inquiry revealed that the college used “intimidation tactics” to “interrogate” Edwards on his treatment of LGBTQ pupils.

During the session, Edwards was reportedly asked what he would do if asked to pray with a kid about their same-sex attraction, which he feels was an effort to trick him into endorsing “conversion therapy,” which the UK Parliament has proposed criminalizing.

Edwards claims that after his termination, he has met with Christians who have been “canceled” by their workplace or community for speaking out against abortion, sexuality, or religion in general.

However, he believes that many Christians also keep quiet for fear of offending others.

As he observes progressive ideas “invading” society and the church, the theologian predicts that more individuals will encounter the same difficulties he has.

At the same time, Edwards expressed encouragement that individuals are pushing back against this tendency.

He believes that his action will raise awareness about the risks to free speech in the United Kingdom and create a legal precedent that will encourage other Christians to speak freely on matters when their beliefs collide with those of the society.

According to the Christian Legal Center, Edwards’ case is based on allegations of harassment, discrimination, and wrongful dismissal.

He intends to sue for wrongful dismissal and compensation under the Equality Act.

The case of Edwards reflects a growing schism among Methodists worldwide on the subject of same-sex marriage.
