A former Lexington County pastor was convicted of sexually molesting 2 of his children and sentenced to 40 years in state prison.
A Richland County jury convicted 62-year-old William Benton Oswald guilty of 3 charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct of a juvenile on Dec. 1 following a 5-day trial.
According to a news release issued by Fifth Circuit Solicitor Byron Gipson, the abuse began in the early 1990s and persisted until the early 2000s, throughout his daughters’ early infancy.
The girls spoke about the violence they faced as youngsters and the trauma they experienced, claiming it had an impact not only on their lives but also on the lives of their friends and relatives.
In his hours-long testimony, Oswald declared his innocence.
According to the counsel, because the children were unable to come forward with the charges until they were adults, there was very little forensic evidence tying Oswald to the crimes.
The prosecution’s assistant lawyers, Thersea Johns and Allison Foster, provided expert testimony to educate the jury on how Oswald was able to conceal his conduct for so long.
Oswald was found guilty on all counts by the jury.
Circuit Judge Eugene Griffith sentenced Oswald to 20 years in jail for each of his daughters’ attacks, with the sentences to run consecutively, totaling 40 years in prison.
