A Mississippi man who admitted to damaging a statue of the pagan idol Baphomet at the Iowa Capitol has been charged with a hate crime.
The statue was part of a display arranged by the Satanic Temple of Iowa in accordance with state statutes that permit religious exhibits in the Iowa Capitol during the holidays.
State and national politicians, including Governor Kim Reynolds and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, sharply criticized the installation.
According to the Satanic Temple of Iowa, on Dec. 14, the display’s centerpiece, a statue portraying the horned deity Baphomet, was “destroyed beyond repair.”
Michael Cassidy, a former Mississippi congressional candidate, was charged the next day with 4th-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.
The man from Lauderdale, Mississippi, told the conservative website The Sentinel, “My conscience is held captive to the Wrd of God, not to bureaucratic decree. And so I acted.”
Now, Polk County prosecutors have charged Cassidy with a more severe felony.
A court document made public on Tuesday accuses him with felony 3rd-degree criminal mischief, stating that the conduct was performed “in violation of individual rights” under Iowa’s hate crime law.
According to Lynn Hicks, a spokesman for the Polk County Attorney’s Office, the cost of replacing or repairing the monument would range between $750 and $1,500, making its destruction an aggravated crime.
(In reality, the Temple has filed a damage estimate that puts the cost of replacing the statuary at $3,000.)
Hicks explained that the hate crime legislation is what elevates the accusation to a felony.
According to court records, Cassidy is due to be arraigned on Feb. 15.
According to the fundraising website GiveSendGo, he has gathered almost $116,000 for his legal defense.
