In a rare turn of events, the former sports director of a private Christian school was led out of Saskatoon Provincial Court in handcuffs – without being sentenced to prison.
Aaron Benneweis, who now resides in Edmonton, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexual exploitation in October.
On Thursday, attorneys argued on how long he should be imprisoned.
The Crown sought a 2-year prison term with no days served, followed by 3 years of probation.
The defense claimed that a 6-month prison term followed by 2 1/2 years of probation would be more suitable.
The minimum penalty for this crime is 45 days in jail.
Judge Marilyn Grey has postponed her ruling until Jan. 18, although Benneweis’ attorney, Brian Pfefferle, has stated that his client is ready to begin his sentence immediately.
Grey claimed she had only seen this happen once before, but she agreed to let Benneweis be brought into jail ahead of his sentence.
Jennifer Beaudry, Benneweis’ victim, witnessed her old gym instructor and coach being handcuffed.
Beaudry was in the same room as Benneweis for the first time in more than a decade
