An Oklahoma judge appointed public defenders to represent 4 members of an anti-government group who appeared in court Wednesday on charges of kidnapping and murdering 2 Kansas women.

Tifany Adams, 54, and her boyfriend Tad Cullum, 43, all of Keyes, Oklahoma, as well as Cole and Cora Twombly of Texhoma, Oklahoma, all pleaded not guilty and were denied bail by the judge.

Texas County Associate District Judge Clark Jett has assigned the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (OIDS) to represent all 4 defendants, according to OIDS Executive Director Tim Laughlin.

All 4 are charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy in the killing of Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39, of Hugoton, Kansas.

Kelley, a pastor’s wife, went along as a court-appointed observer to supervise the Mar. 30 visit.

They failed to show up for the party, sparking a 2-week hunt that culminated in the arrests of the 2 couples on Saturday and the discovery of the bodies on Sunday.

Adams is the children’s grandmother, and authorities claim she had a bitter custody battle with Butler.

Arrest affidavits described a terrible scene where the women’s car was discovered, not far from the rural highway crossing where Butler had planned to pick up her son and daughter from Adams.

Investigators discovered blood on the road and Butler’s glasses near a shattered hammer.

According to a witness who spoke with Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officials, the 4 accused were all members of “an anti-government group with a religious affiliation.”

According to the affidavits, they nicknamed themselves “God’s Misfits” and met on a daily basis at the Twomblys’ home and that of another couple who, according to Adams, watched the children the day the ladies disappeared.
