Liezel de Jager’s husband appears in court for the first time and requests bail.
The husband of Amanzimtoti, a coastal town just south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa Pastor Liezel de Jager, made his first appearance in court more than 2 years after she was strangled to death at her house.
Werner de Jager, 42, was detained last week in Bloemfontein after the SAPS Cold Case Unit took over the case.
The accused made a brief appearance in court, indicating his desire to apply for bail.
The murder of de Jager, the pastor of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk – Suidkus (NG Kerk – Suidkus), made national news, and rumors quickly circulated about her husband’s supposed involvement.
Werner de Jager was reported missing by his father-in-law just 2 weeks after the murder, and he was later recovered inside his vehicle, parked in a sugar plantation near Illovo.
The accused, who seemed dazed, was taken to a nearby hospital.
The civil rights organization Action Society stated earlier this year that police had not yet concluded digital forensic examinations.
The case has been rescheduled for December 7, and the State will oppose bail.
