CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: [UPDATE] Pastor Liezel De Jager | Christmas in Jail for Husband Accused of Killing Pastor Wife | Case Postponed to Jan. 9, 2024 for Bail Application | the State will Oppose Bail [#LiezelDeJager #WernerDeJager]

Werner de Jager, the husband of a pastor Liezel De Jager slain in October 2021, will remain behind bars after his bail plea was denied.

A laid-back Werner de Jager appeared in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court for the second time today, this time to request for bail.

He was escorted to the holding cells just after 09:00 AM South African Time, where he waited for his case to be called, although he momentarily left the cells to change into some new clothing that someone had provided him.

He appeared in the identical clothes he had worn to his initial court appearance 10 days earlier.

In October 2021, Werner is charged of killing his wife, Reverend Liezel of the NG Kerk-Suidkus.

At her residence, she was strangled to death.

When the hearing began, his personally appointed attorney André May from Potchefstroom informed the court that he had no objection to cameras being permitted in the courtroom, but that his client should be treated with respect because some photographers had “come too close to the defendant’s personal space.”

“In principle, I don’t have any problem with the media, but we want respect. Let’s not turn this into a circus,” May added.

Magistrate Zama Nyuswa stated that photographing Werner was not an issue because he had previously featured in the media and the matter had been made public.

The prosecution team urged the court to postpone the bail application until next year so that they could finalize data such as Werner’s residence location and a report on his mental health.

The defense did not object to the postponement, saying it would give them more time to research the case and allow the investigative team to finalize some specifics.

May informed the court that Werner had been residing at the same house where he was detained since February, therefore a lengthy postponement for verification purposes was unnecessary.

He did, however, express concern that his client was not receiving his prescribed medication.

He urged the court to have Werner’s doctor’s prescription letter given to the authorities so that he may acquire his medicine.

The case was rescheduled for bail application on Jan. 9, 2024, although the state has signaled that it would oppose bail.

Werner was sent to Westville Prison on remand.
