The Olathe School District, a public unified school district headquartered in Olathe, Kansas has approved a “Satan Club” despite a petition against it.

According to a representative for Olathe Public Schools, “the club application met the criteria to establish a student-initiated club and is now recognized as a student-initiated club at Olathe Northwest High School.”

Olathe Northwest High School is a public high school located in Olathe, Kansas serving students in grades 9–12.

The Olathe School District confirmed in mid-December that a student had applied to form a “High School Satan Club.”

Parents had conflicting feelings about it; some were concerned, while others believed it was a legitimate right.

A student started an online petition to “Stop the Satan Worship Club at Olathe Northwest.”

By the evening of Dec. 18, it had gathered over 6,800 signatures; it presently has over 7,500.

The school district has standards that the club must meet before their application is accepted.

At least 10 students interested in creating the organization have to sign the application.

Signatures from a student representative and a faculty supervisor were also required.

The club’s student leaders were then expected to present to authorities on what the group will provide to the high school.

The Olathe school system stated that while assessing any application, they look at the Equal Access Act.

According to the district, federal law prohibits all public schools from discriminating against an applicant student-initiated club based on the message, which is philosophical or religious.

In other words, if the school accepts one club, it allows all — as long as the application procedure is completed and the group satisfies the criteria for recognition.

The First Amendment protects that freedom, and the district informed FOX4 that “Olathe Public Schools follows both state and federal laws related to student groups.”
