BIG BREAKING NEWS – ‘VERY UN-CHRISTIAN’: Outraged teachers complain about church’s handling of recent layoffs [#ArchDioceseOfNewYork] 11/28
Former Catholic school teacher Carolyn Shea minces no words about the Archdiocese of New York’s shabby treatment of the instructors laid off this past July.
Carolyn Shea, along with dozens of her dismissed co-woers, are getting stiffed on severance pay, according to teachers union officials, while the church creates impediments for its unemployed teachers to land new jobs at other archdiocesan schools.
“Come on. It’s not like a lot of Catholic school teachers are working for the money. It’s a slap in the face, very un-Christian. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.”
– Carolyn Shea, a 16-year veteran of our Lady of Mount Carmel School on Staten Island
The teachers union charges the church is playing fast and loose with 182 of its ex-instructors, excluding some from potential openings despite a contractual obligation guaranteeing them 3 offers before their removal from the list of potential rehires.
Others who took jobs outside the archdiocese were denied their severance: 4 weeks, a total of $4,500 regardless of length of service.
