Pastor Rich Tidwell of Ormond Church in Canton, Missouri, has stunned followers and critics alike. On June 7, he posted on Instagram that he now has two wives—and that his second wife is expecting their 8th child together.

Tidwell has publicly defended his decision by referencing the Bible, noting that plural marriage occurs in the Old Testament. Examples include:
Joash, who had two wives (2 Chronicles 24:2–3)
David, who had multiple wives (2 Samuel 12:7–8)
Jacob, whose two wives and two concubines became the mothers of the 12 tribes of Israel (Genesis 30:18; Ruth 4:11)
Levirate marriage, where a man marries his brother’s widow (Deuteronomy 25:5)

Tidwell presents these Old Testament examples as part of biblical history, while many Christian leaders respond that New Testament teachings set a different standard for pastors—calling them to be the husband of one wife.

“But this revelation sparks a huge debate in the Christian world…”

Tidwell’s announcement raises questions about how church leadership is defined and what biblical qualifications apply. Bible commentators note that the New Testament—particularly in 1 Timothy 3:2—calls for an elder to be ‘the husband of one wife,’ a principle often applied to pastoral roles.

At the same time, Tidwell points to Old Testament examples of plural marriage to explain his perspective, though his interpretation remains controversial among mainstream Christian leaders.

“And Joash did what was RIGHT in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest. Jehoiada got for him TWO wives, and he had sons and daughters.” (2 Chronicles 24:2-3)
.
Grab your popcorn, this will undoubtedly be the biggest cup of tea in your feed today.
.
Did you know that in the Bible God prescribed multiple wives for David—“I gave your masters wives into your arms” (2 Sam 12:7-8)? He prescribed Jacob to build the 12 tribes through 4 wives (Ruth 4:11, Gen 30:18)? He prescribed married men to wed their brother’s widow (Deut 25:5)? In fact, like the entire lineage of Jesus outlined in Matthew 1:1-17, God has prescribed and predestined (Eph 1:11) every lawful marriage that has ever existed (Matt 19:6), including the plural ones.
.
Jesus illustrates Himself as the Bridegroom of 10 virgins (Matt 25:1-13), and Paul likewise indicates every individual church is a virgin betrothed to Him (2 Cor 11:2). Moreover, God the Father depicts Himself as married to Israel and Judah simultaneously (Jer 3:6-10, 31:32).
.
If God approves the practice, why did Paul state that an Elder must be husband of “one” (mia) wife, while a Widow must have been the wife of “one” (heis) man? (see 1 Tim 3:2 vs 5:9). Paul didn’t use Mias (ordinal first) vs Heis (numeral one) arbitrarily. A man who divorces his first wife—the wife of his youth (Mal 2:15-16)—to marry a second is an Adulterer as witnessed in Matt 5:32, Matt 19:9, Mark 10:11, Luke 16:18, & 1 Cor 7:11. Paul is disqualifying such a man from eldership.
.
Likewise, the Apostle used two different words for marital ownership in 1 Corinthians 7:2. A man will “heautou” (exclusively own) a wife, and a wife will “idios” (communally own) a husband.
.
So here’s the big announcement: my name is Rich Tidwell, I have two beautiful wives, and my second wife is expecting my 8th child! We’re thrilled for what the Lord has done for our family (see Luke 18:29-30)!
