Illinois lawmakers have officially passed Senate Bill 1950—better known as “Deb’s Law.”
This controversial measure would make Illinois the next state to legalize physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill adults.
Senate passed: April 9, 2025 — Vote: 54–1
House passed: May 29, 2025 — Vote: 63–42
October 31, 2025: The bill was officially enrolled and sent to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s desk for signature.

If the governor signs it, Illinois will join Oregon, Washington, and California in allowing doctors to prescribe lethal medication to certain patients who request it.

Under “Deb’s Law,” a mentally capable adult diagnosed with less than six months to live could request and self-administer a fatal dose of prescribed medication.
Two doctors must confirm the diagnosis and capacity.
The patient must make two oral requests and one written request.
The drug must be self-administered—no one else can administer it.
And the official cause of death would be listed as the illness, not suicide.
Supporters call it compassion and choice.
Opponents call it the quiet collapse of the sanctity of life.

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago, warned that the bill “opens a moral door that can never be closed.”
He said when death is treated as healthcare, “we lose sight of what mercy truly means.”
(Archdiocese of Chicago)
The Catholic Conference of Illinois urged Governor Pritzker to veto the bill, saying it “places suffering people at risk instead of surrounding them with love and support.”
(Catholic Charities Southern Illinois)
Evangelical leaders and pro-life advocates—like the Illinois Baptist State Association and Concerned Women for America—are calling believers to pray, rally, and speak up for life.
Even disability-rights advocates at Access Living have joined the opposition, warning that the law “offers death when what people need is dignity, care, and hope.”

For Christians, this debate isn’t political—it’s spiritual.
Scripture reminds us in Psalm 139:16 (NKJV):
“Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.”
Faith leaders say real compassion doesn’t end suffering by ending life—it stays, prays, and walks through the valley with those who are hurting.
Because once society decides that some lives are no longer worth living, it risks losing its moral soul.

Be honest:
Should doctors ever help end a life in the name of compassion—or should every life be protected to its natural end?

“Protect Life” or “Support Choice.”
